This is not a collection, but simply an accumulation of old wooden spools. I guess they don't even make them anymore. Plastic and styrofoam spools have taken their place. The white one in the top row is wood. Not plastic and not painted. It appears to be made of white wood of some kind. The two that are standing on end are the oldest. The printing is directly on the wood. Later spools had paper labels on the end. The big one is probably from a factory. There used to be a lot of clothing producers (called "shirt factories" locally) in this area, but those jobs are now in other countries.

Excellent American and pretty unique. You are right about the fishing and all. And let me add that millions of American children used these along with their pretend games. An avid car player from first rememberances until the age of........ten or eleven, I recall using these spools in "playing cars." Sometimes these spools were gas pumps, columns for block houses, barrels, etc. Interesting photo that evoke pleasant memories.
