THOSE WERE THE DAYS WHEN THE OFFICER MIGHT TELL YOU TO STOP YOUR DRINKING AND GO ON HOME AND CALL IT A NIGHT. IT WAS A DIFFERENT AMERICA WHEN THIS AUTO PROWLED THE STREETS IN SEARCH OF BAD NEWS HAPPENING........

Image050C - Dodge LaFemme
a beautiful car, inside and out..........most people in the 60s might have thought the name somewhat too tawdry or Franco cinematic; it might have been akin to naming it the Dodge Strumpette or Strumpete. Names do have considerable influence. Take the Edsel and the Henry J; add Kaiser and Frazier, funny and weird names. How the Lincoln became acceptable is something I have wondered about. There was a Franklin, but it is no more. There was never a Washington. As far as I know, there has never been a car named a Robert.

REMBERING GREAT AMERICAN NOVELS
REMEMBERING GREAT AMERICAN NOVELS BY R.L. HUFFSTUTTER
THIS IS THE AMERICA THAT POPS UP IN MY MIND WHEN I THINK OF THE TERM "GREAT AMERICAN NOVEL." IT IS LITERALLY, A SLICE OF OLD MAIN STREET USA WHEN EVERYONE IN TOWN KNEW EVERYONE IN TOWN, WHEN THERE WERE EYES GLUED TO EVERY LITTLE TAVERN TO KEEP TRACK OF WHO WENT IN AND WHO WENT OUT. THE BIG BROTHER CONCEPT IS NOTHING NEW. WHEREAS THERE ARE NOW LIVE CAMERAS MONITORING MANY ACTIVITIES, THE EYES OF THE IDLE SITTING IN WINDOW ALCOVES ONCE RECORDED THESE DEEDS IN FULL AND ACCURATE MEANS: MEMORY. THOSE WERE THE DAYS WHEN RUMORS AND RUMORS OF WARS BETWEEN DOMESTIC COUPLES WERE VALIDATED BY BUSY TONGUES. THERE WERE SOME, HOWEVER, WHO SAT BESIDE THE WINDOW FOR ENTERTAINMENT OF SELF, NOT FOR PUBLICATION. WAGGING TONGUES, OLD MAIDENS, OLD MEN, GEEZERS, TOWN NUTS, TOWN TRAMPS, DRUNKS OF ALL STATIONS, THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE TRANSIENTS, THE YOUNG, THE OLD. THERE WERE MARRIAGES, WEDDINGS, DEATHS, BIRTHS. THERE WERE VISITORS FROM CHICAGO GETTING OFF THE IC AT THE DEPOT. THERE WAS THE SMELL OF THE BEER IN SUMMER, THE AROMA OF BREAD BAKING IN THE AUTUMN. THERE WERE GRANDPARENTS ON PORCHS. OLD MEN SAT ON BENCHES SPITTING, TELLING JOKES ONLY MEANT FOR MEN. WOMEN PURCHASED YARDS OF MATERIAL FOR MANY REASONS. THE CHILDREN HAD COUSINS ON THE FARM NINE MILES WEST OF TOWN. THE SMELL OF HOG MANURE WAS RIPE WHEN THE WHEN WAS RIGHT. THIS WAS ILLINOIS. CARL SANDBURG WROTE ABOUT IT. OTHERS WRITE ABOUT IT. THE HOME OF LINCOLN. COURTHOUSES OF YESTERDAY'S FAME COME BACK TODAY IN POLITICS. ANOTHER NATIVE SON. ANOTHER PRESIDENT FROM ILLINOIS. SEARS TOWER ABOUT TO BE SOLD AND RENAMED. THE L TRAINS. MARSHALL FIELDS. THE PALMER HOUSE. TRAINS. RUNNING IN AND OUT OF CHICAGO TO SMALL TOWNS. MEN SITTING AT BARS DRINKING BEER. WOMEN PLANNING SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSONS. BOYS WAVING AT PEOPLE IN ILLINOIS CENTRAL TRAINS HEADED SOMEWHERE. ILLINOIS. RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF AMERICA. ALL ROADS AND TRACKS LED TO CHICAGO. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, TWO WORDS THAT MADE PEOPLE IN FARAWAY LANDS SMILE AND SAY "WINDY CITY" OR "LINCOLN'S HOME."

A REMINDER OF DAYS SPENT IN LA
ANOTHER CLASSIC PHOTO BY 16WADEST. HIS PHOTOS CONTINUE TO STIR MEMORIES OF ANOTHER ERA. HAVING SPENT MUCH TIME ON THE WEST COAST IN MY YOUTH, I RECALL SEARCHING FOR CHEAP HOTELS TO STAY WHILE SEEKING A FORTUNE..........CONGRATS TO THE PHOTOGRAPHER
U.S.N.T.C. SAN DIEGO 1960 (PARKING LOT)
WHILE WE MARCHED BY THESE AUTOS BACK IN BOOT CAMP, WE WERE THINKING OF BEING ABLE TO BUY A 56 CORVETTE OR THUNDERBIRD WHEN WE GRADUATED. THE BASIC PAY BACK THEN WAS $78 PER MONTH. THE SPORTS CARS WOULD BE A LONG WAY OFF...............
THE DINERS OF THE 60S HAD GREAT FOOD...
Every place back in the 60s was a good place to eat. And this is a great tribute to another era. Your photos are a documentary of america. Congratulations............Rob

wooden spools
THE BELOW TEXT BY HOWARD
This is not a collection, but simply an accumulation of old wooden spools. I guess they don't even make them anymore. Plastic and styrofoam spools have taken their place. The white one in the top row is wood. Not plastic and not painted. It appears to be made of white wood of some kind. The two that are standing on end are the oldest. The printing is directly on the wood. Later spools had paper labels on the end. The big one is probably from a factory. There used to be a lot of clothing producers (called "shirt factories" locally) in this area, but those jobs are now in other countries.
THE BELOW TEXT BY THE EDITOR
Excellent American and pretty unique. You are right about the fishing and all. And let me add that millions of American children used these along with their pretend games. An avid car player from first rememberances until the age of........ten or eleven, I recall using these spools in "playing cars." Sometimes these spools were gas pumps, columns for block houses, barrels, etc. Interesting photo that evoke pleasant memories.

MY NAVY FRIEND, CHARLES, on the beach at Venice, California
flew up to NAS Alameda and spent a lot of time in a fog, in and around North Beach, Oakland and interesting areas in Marin County.
MY NAVY FRIEND, CHARLES, on the beach at Venice, California
On other occasions, we headed down beyond the border to Ensenada, a quiet, sleepy fishing village that was just being rediscovered after a heydey of the 30s when Prohibition made it a poplar spot for awhile. During the heydey, numerous plush haciendas were built for the drinking tourist trade. One place we found fantastic was Jack Dempsey's Casino, set back from the beach a few hundred yards, half hidden from the public. Another fun spot was the Plaza Hotel, the only hotel in Ensenada in 1960. When four or five of us navy guys went to Ensenada, we rented the penthouse.

Bill 1930
WHO REMEMBERS BILL? ANYONE OUT THERE, ANYONE AT ALL?
ANOTHER GREAT PHOTO ON LOAN FROM GREGORY PETERSON FROM PHOTOS IN HIS PERSONAL COLLECTION. THE PHOTO OF "BILL" IS ONE OF THE MANY GREGORY PETERSON HAS COLLECTED IN HIS VARIOUS TRAVELS AND VISITS TO ANTIQUE SHOW, ANTIQUE SHOPS AND FLEA MARKETS. THESE PHOTOS, HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR GREGORY'S FONDNESS AND RESPECT FOR PEOPLE OF THE PAST, WOULD NO DOUBT HAVE ENDED IN THE LANDFILL SOMEWHERE.
I AM THANKFUL THAT THERE ARE PHOTOGRAPHERS AND COLLECTORS WHO FIND THESE OLD AND SOMETIMES FADED IMAGES INTERESTING. THEY DO HAVE A STORY TO TELL; EVEN WITHOUT NAMES OR DATES, THEY WILL CAUSE THOSE OF US WHO ARE INTERESTED TO STOP, LOOK AND LISTEN...TO THE ECHOES OF THE PAST.
THANKS TO BILL FOR BEING THERE IN 1930.
AND THANKS TO GREGORY FOR PRESERVING THE PHOTO OF BILL, WHOEVER HE WAS.
"The found photos are in my personal collection, but while I own the actual image, I sort of think of them as public property," stated Gregory.

NEW YEARS DAY IN TOKYO 1962

We headed up to Tokyo to gather all of the entertainment intelligence we could handle in one special night of the year. We found that although the dollar was worth 360 yen then, it didn't mean much on New Year's eve. Talk about a high end evening. The lights on the Ginza burned bright all night and by morning, we were too smart for our own good. We headed back to the base. It was my last night of Tokyo night life; I opted for the casual and smaller bars and cafes of Yokohama and had another two years of total fun. There are many memories I had not yet experience when this photo was shot. My buddy, on the left, went on to an electronics career as a Naval Officer and is now, no doubt, a retired admiral. He was one intelligent young man and someone I will always remember as a good friend.

Bruxelles 26 - Blonde on Blonde
Well, they'll stone ya when you're walkin' 'long the street
They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to go home
Then they'll stone ya when you're there all alone
But I would not feel so all alone
Everybody must get stoned.
